Around this time of the year or rather around mid-march, Cherry Blossoms are a great visual treat for Bangaloreans.
Bangalore, the garden city is a home to many flowering trees. The streets of Bangalore at one point in time were arranged  in such a way that during most months in the year there would be a blossom of either the Gulmohar in bright orange, the Jaracanda with  deep purple, the Golden Cassia in bright yellow or the Cherry blossom in light blushing pink.

Mid-March to early April is the time for the Cherry blossoms.  The Cherry blossoms with a light pinkish tinge gently fall all over the streets thus laying out a carpet of tender pink flowers all afternoon in the gentle early summer sun .

The tree sheds all its leaves and  presents a lovely picture of pink blossoms that are a visual treat and a photographer's delight.  The full blossom does not last longer a week of two. Before you have made a mental note to click them in all their grandeur, they wither away presenting a bare tree with tender shoot of leaves originating from them for yet another season.

The prime time for Cherry blossom is now over.  In the calendar  of serial blossoms, it then gives way to the gentle Jaracanda which paints the town purple before it too withers away in April to give way to the Grand gulmohars. More about the Grand Gulmohars in yet another post.
The serial blossoms of this garden city is a sight to Marvel.  It was the passion and the foresight of Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore about 150 years ago, who encouraged his soldiers to bring saplings from all over the world to be planted in the kingdom of Mysore.  The garden city was then carefully planned and its streets were lined with serial blossoming trees.

Thanks to Unilever’s campus and the  foresight of its landscape architects about 20-30 years ago, the roads leading to their Brookefield campus are lined with Cherry blossoms despite the recent advent of mindless concrete jungles housing paying guests who work for the IT and ITes industry  in the tech parks around the area. Unilever has now sold off the Brookfield real estate to developers. One only hopes that the developers would preserve whatever can be salvaged of those lovely trees inside the campus that are now walled by those monstruous blue tin boulders.

Here were some amazing pictures that cannot describe in words the beauty and splendour of Cherry blossoms that line our neighbourhood. They offer us a treat when they are  in full bloom during the season.

  2. One of my favorite places in the world is Washington DC when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. My husband and I went a few years ago and walked along the tidal basin. It looked it was snowing as the leaves fell from the trees. Even though it was raining a little, it was still one of the most beautiful days I've seen.
